Migrants Group Weekly update - 21/4/17
Migrants Centre
Category: Activities | Community Programme

Hi folks,

I hope you had an enjoyable Easter break and that you are also taking a long weekend this weekend.

Here’s some information about what’s happening with our Waimakariri - Migrants Group.

Conversational English Classes

  • Woodend:- The Woodend classes have started and are continuing to run  on Friday nights at the Woodend Methodist Church Hall (see attached flier)
  • Rangiora:- The Rangiora classes are starting on Saturday 6th May at the Rangiora Town Hall (see attached flier)

Cooking Classes

  • A collaborative effort by a number of local community organisations have come together to create the Cooking Classes in Rangiora. These will start on Friday 5th May at the Community College North Canterbury (see attached flier)

Intercultural Seminar – We recently held The Chambers – Intercultural Seminar in Rangiora, it was well delivered and the content was fascinating. Who knew Kiwi’s were:-

  • laid back
  • we use a lot of slang
  • we dress casually (dressing gowns, slippers and bare-feet)
  • DIY - do it yourself is anything but normal
  • Humour, sarcasm and friendship are essential to Kiwi’s in their workplaces
  • Because we’re so polite and indirect with our communication style our requests often get lost in translation

(attached is an article written by Lisa Burdes from The Chambers, which I thought you might be interested in reading. Funding permitting, we plan to run another of Lisa’s Intercultural Seminars later this year.)

Have a good week/weekend everyone. It’s School holidays so off until next Wednesday.

See you then.

Warm regards
